4 large potatoes, peeled and cubed
2 tbsp butter
½ cup milk
Salt and pepper to taste
½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
For the minced meat filling:
500g (1 lb) minced beef or lamb
1 small onion, finely chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tsp paprika
½ tsp ground cumin
½ tsp black pepper
Salt to taste
2 tbsp tomato paste
½ cup beef broth or water
1 tbsp olive oil
For the topping:
1 cup grated cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a mix)
2 tbsp breadcrumbs (optional)

Prepare the mashed potatoes:
Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender (about 15-20 minutes).
Drain and mash them with butter, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. Set aside.
Prepare the minced meat filling:
Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat.
Sauté the chopped onion and garlic until soft.
Add the minced meat, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned.
Stir in the paprika, cumin, black pepper, and salt.
Add the tomato paste and broth, then simmer for 5-7 minutes until the mixture thickens.
Assemble the gratin:
Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F).
Spread half of the mashed potatoes in a greased baking dish.
Add the minced meat mixture as the second layer.
Cover with the remaining mashed potatoes.
Sprinkle grated cheese and breadcrumbs on top.
Bake:
Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown.
Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.
