Preparation of Croque-Monsieur
Step 1: Prepare the slices of bread
Preheat your oven to 180°C (thermostat 6).
Spread a thin layer of crème fraîche on one side of each slice of sandwich bread.
Tip: Lightly butter the slices for extra crispiness.
Step 2: Top with ham and bacon
Place a slice of ham on 4 slices of bread (those without butter if you used any).
Brown the bacon in a pan until lightly browned, then drain.
Spread the bacon over the ham.
Adding the Cheeses
Step 3: Grated Cheese and Goat Cheese
Add a generous handful of grated cheese on the bacon.
Cover with another slice of sandwich bread.
Spread a thin layer of crème fraîche on top of the croques, sprinkle with a little grated cheese.
Finish with a slice of goat cheese placed in the center of each croque.
Cooking and Finishing
Step 4: Baking
Arrange the croques on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and golden.
Step 5: Decoration
Remove the croques from the oven and sprinkle with chopped parsley if desired for a touch of freshness.
Serve immediately with a green salad or a light soup.
Preparation Tips
Lighten the recipe: Replace the crème fraîche with a homemade béchamel sauce, or with a mixture of fromage blanc and mustard for a lighter version.
Gourmet variation: Try wholemeal or cereal bread for a more rustic version.
Accompaniment: A dry white wine or a sweet cider will enhance these melting croques.
